Governor Parnell announced today the appointment of Juneau resident PeggyAnn McConnochie to the 5 member Redistricting Board. The Redistricting Board has the important task of configuring the election districts following the official report of the decennial census. PeggyAnn has a great understanding of our region. I am very pleased that she is willing to serve the State in this critically important work.
Once the U.S. Census Bureau releases the population figures for Alaska, which must be done by April 1, the Board will have 90 days to adopt a final plan. In the first 30 days the Board will develop initial plans, and the following 60 days will be spent hearing from the public in communities across Alaska. It is anticipated that each of the 40 House districts will have to pick up approximately 2,500 residents. For Southeast Alaska, this means that each of our 5 districts will be affected.
