The community of Tenakee recently honored Juneau veterans
who have served in wars that followed the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks
on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
Joining Tenakee residents and local veterans for a fishing
trip in Tenakee Inlet were Major Kyle Holt and Staff Sergeant Michael Manson,
active-duty members of the Alaska Army National Guard, and Staff Sergeant James
Zuelow and Sergeant Rebecca Manson, reservists with the Alaska Army National
Guard.
Major Holt served in Afghanistan, Staff Sergeant Zuelow
spent time in Afghanistan and Iraq, Staff Sergeant Michael Manson was deployed
to Kuwait, and his wife, Sergeant Rebecca Manson, served in Iraq.
The four sailed to Tenakee aboard the state ferry LeConte on
August 12 with Holt’s wife, Tiffany, and Zuelow’s children, Calvin and
Josephine. Early the next morning, they took off with eight Tenakee veterans on
four boats. With the sun shining and the cohos biting, they returned to the
dock by noon with all the fish they wanted.
The Tenakee Business Association and the community held a
dinner and reception that evening where the visiting veterans, along with
Tenakee veterans, were honored for their service. The oldest veteran present
was Rie Muñoz who served in 1944 as a corporal in the Women’s Army Corps. They
all enjoyed home-cooked meals as well as some of that day’s catch.
The community of Tenakee, Tuck Harry of Fishing Bear
Charters, Cathy Muñoz, the Tenakee Lodge, and others helped organize the event.
Skippers and crew included Tracy Rivera, Wally and Brad Roman, Dan Martin, Tuck
Harry, and Chris Jacobsen.
